WORKSHOP POLITECNICO 2010
The advanced workshop “Sanitation in Sub-Saharan Countries: the fundamental role of education” was held in Turin between Italian and African experts about the criticalities in the water and sanitation sectors in this area.

The advanced workshop “Sanitation in Sub-Saharan Countries: the fundamental role of education” was developed in the main aim of analyzing - through a discussion between Italian and African experts - the criticalities in the water and sanitation sectors, which - as it is nowadays well known – play a significant role in the issues of land productivity and human health besides - in more general terms – in development as a whole. It involved experts of the field coming from different States of Sub-Saharan Africa - namely: Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda - who were offered the opportunity to come to Turin and develop a fruitful exchange of experiences and competences as related to the worldwide crucial issue of sanitation. The discussions covered not only matters which are typical of hydraulics, hydrology and sanitation engineering, but also of agriculture, economics and energy. Said criticalities were therefore analyzed taking into account the organization tissue of the local governments, infrastructures, technical capabilities, local training curricula, specific geographic and climate features, as well the local characteristic of environment vulnerability. The workshop was structured so that it could allow comparing the different experiences and defining a training plan which would specifically fit the requirements of Sub Saharan Africa countries, thus dealing with the following subjects:
1- strengthening the local capacities by both acting as a complement of the university curricula and offering terms of continuous vocational upgrading;
2- fostering the acquisition of legislative, control and technical standards which would enable to activate coordinated mechanisms for the implementation of the integrated management principles.
Politecnico di Torino and the Hydroaid Association - which are sharing the mission of support to development - cooperated to the progress of the workshop, making available to the project their assets of knowledge, experience and relationships. The workshop - which alternated moments dedicated to the in-depth analysis of specific themes, round tables and study visits to plants and laboratories - was held from November 22nd through December 1st 2010.
