Technical course on Wastewater Treatment and Disposal of Urban Solid Waste

The 2009 edition of HYDROAID's Distance Learning on Sanitation was attended successfully by 63 participants: 40 of them were ex-participants of Hydroaid's past courses, and 23 were new participants, selected on the basis of meritocratic criteria.

The participants to the E-Course have come from several different countries all over the world:

Afghanistan; Albania; Algeria; Bangladesh; Brasile; Burkina Faso; Cambodia; Camerun; Congo; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Ghana; Iraq; Jordania; Kenia; Liberia; Macedonia; Mauritania; Mexico; Montenegro; Morocco; Mozambique; Nepal; Pakistan; Palestinian Authority; Dem. Rep. of Congo; Senegal; Serbia; Somalia; Sudan; Uganda; Vietnam.

We propose now the second edition of the Sanitation course 2010. This edition is updated and involves in the didactic activities the scientific & technical partners of the Association plus some leading Italian institutions and association in the field of environment governance, namely:
AIAT Association of Environmental and Planning Engineers,
AMIAT the waste utility of the Turin area,
ATOR Turin optimal district for the governance of waste,
FEDERAMBIENTE the association of all the Italian private and public istitutions working for the environment,
UNIVERSITY of SASSARI.

The 2010 Sanitation course is open to 70 participants.
20 outstations are reserved to former participants of Hydroaid courses in Turin while 50 are reserved for new participants from developing and emerging countries.

The course is free of charge. Nevertheless, we ask for a serious commitment when enroll at the course so that your participation excludes the one of another. So please, evaluate carefully your interest and your possibilities (time, connection ability etc) to attend the on line activities.

The sanitation course is recommended to technicians and managers of the developing and emerging countries to improve the capability of the local authorities in managing and governing the environmental resources for the conservation of water and soil from pollution phenomena.

BACKGROUND: This E-course is financed by Hydroaid's non-profit association which involves local and regional authorities, water utilities and renowned banks and academic institutions of Italy.

DURATION: April 19th through June 11th 2010

FEATURES AND PURPOSES OF HYDROAID's DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMME ON SANITATION:
The E-learning distance course is aimed at providing practical and technical tools for the management of environmental issues at urban scale.
The course provides the essential elements for the design, sizing, management and maintenance of plants involved in the 2 fields (corresponding to the 2 main subjects of the training program), namely:
1. Wastewater treatment and reuse (about 20 hours of individual study);
2. Treatment and disposal of the urban solid waste (about 24 hours of individual study).

STRUCTURE OF THE E-COURSE:
The 2 subjects are divided into different units, each focused on one specific topic, as detailed in the call of application Every unit contains essential theoretical information, operating diagrams, practical descriptions and images with reference to real case studies, applicative solved examples to exercise your own design skills.

The contents of subject 1 "Wastewater treatment and reuse" are divided into the units below, each one corresponding to a specific topic, namely:
U1: Features of the municipal wastewaters;
U2: Wastewater treatment plants (with in-depth analysis on plant management);
U3: Wastewater reuse.

The contents of subject 2 "Treatment and disposal of the urban solid waste" are divided into the units below, each of them corresponding to a specific topic, namely:
U1: Features of the urban solid waste;
U2: Solid waste disposal: landfills (with in-depth analysis on the issue of landfill site selection);
U3: Waste separation downstream and at the source;
U4: Composting.

STAGE OPPORTUNITY: to participate the course give the opportunity to at least 10 students to attend 2 weeks of stage in Italy visiting sanitation plants, attending seminars and lectures.

LANGUAGE: The official language of the didactic material is English.
