"Climate Change" ! We must adapt to it
Published: February 26, 2009

Mauritania is one of the Sahelian’s countries most vulnerable to the climate changes, which moreover starts to feel little by little especially in the field of the environment : Drought, desertification, flood, land degradation, soil erosion by water and wind, invasion of the locusts …

In Mauritania both of the environmental dimension and sustainable development belong to the main components already identified as a governmental priority.

In another hand Mauritania has enormous potentialities in term of biodiversity. But this one is threatened of disappearance because of the negative effects of the dryness and desertification. To defeat this threat, many measurements were taken for safeguarding the ecosystem and resulted to the creation of the protected areas: National park of Ban d’ Arguin (NPBA) and the national park of Diawling (NPD).

The implementation of the plans of management of these two parks contributes to the reconstitution of the biodiversity in their several and respective intervention zones.

Studies are currently committed for better knowing the impacts of these two parks on the socio-economic aspect and the environment.

Dear Amadou, the ones you mentioned are really good examples of environment protection to spread and popularize, with the hope that other nations and institutions will follow this way. Of course, it’s fundamental that common strategies and agreements at world global level are taken in order to tackle climate changes: it’s not a problem that can be solved only at local level. We know that many important international meetings have taken place in the last decades and different “protocols” have been signed by most of industrialized countries about this issue, i.e.: Rio de Janeiro treaty in 1992, Berlin conference in 2005, Kyoto protocol signed in 1997, Buenos Aires conference in 1998, Bonn negotiations in 2001, Montreal conference in 2005, and many others. Even if tangible results on reduction of polluting emissions are still weak, public opinion in industrialized countries is becoming more sensitive to this issue, day by day: it’s important to go on by this way, with the support of governments of all the nations involved. And at local level, it’s also really important that common people, above all in industrialized countries, become more “familiar” to this issue in their daily life, change their mind and start to do little tangible actions in order to improve the global situation. Little actions are important too, such as a reduction in the consumption of energy (with consequent lower polluting emissions for its production) and of scarse resources like water. I think that even our responsibility in our single life is bigger than it seems, because the sum of actions of millions of people can have a big impact in emission reduction.

i think the climate change is recently threatening the entire world specially the sub-sahran countries though it was held several meetings or conference that was intended to tackle this issues but still to be accomplished . Really it is a good attemp to defeat this threat as our friends in Mauritania currried out many measurements to safegaurd ecosystem and finally resulted concrte result. lastly i do recommend in order to minimize the global change the goverments should come with concrete stretagy to tackle this issues.
